Turkey Carving and some beautiful drawings...

Tony Vincent is an #edhero of mine and he used Periscope to highlight his tradition of turkey carving.  You might be thinking how can you turkey carve at school? I did too and made sure to watch the Periscope since it caught my attention.  Tony used a graham cracker and only using your mouth chew a shape of a turkey.  I had to show a few images from Google on what a turkey silhouette would look like and then we got down to business.
off to a great start...

We used the directed drawing steps of Pilgrim boy and girls and Native American girls and boys, from http://firstgradeblueskies.com and I thought they were the cutest thing ever! I love how different they look and I do believe kid personality came through with the colors, backgrounds, and accessories.

They were too cute to keep all to ourselves so we ran them over to the Veteran's Nursing Home to brighten their day.  Might need to be a monthly trip.  Thanks First Grade Blue Skies.

Where Oh Where is the Turkey?

The yearly disguise the turkey family project was a big hit as usual.  Even after all these years I cannot believe how creative some of the families are!

These are the cutest right?  I don't think the hunter will recognize any of these turkeys.

Turkey Cooking Show 2014

Happy Thanksgiving!  I cannot believe we are at the end of November already.  Our firsties spent some time watching Kid Snippets Cooking Show and talked about how to cook a turkey.  Thanks to the moms helping-Ms. Kathleen and Ms. Amanda for getting us started.  We wrote how to directions and practiced reading them so many times just in time for the big day filming.  I put them all together for the Wright's Rippers Turkey Cooking Show 2014.  I hope you enjoy the hard work these amazing kids put forth for the premiere of this video.  I will sit down with my family today and count my many blessings.  Teaching 1st grade and these firsties top my list.  I hope each of you enjoy the day and share your love.  You can always make a comment and I will share with the kids.  Happy Thanksgiving. See you on Monday.

Thanksgiving 2013

Happy turkey day! There are so many things to be thankful for it would take me hours to type.  I am so thankful for a career where I see the good in the world on a daily basis.  I am blessed beyond my wildest dreams with a fabulous husband, amazing kids, loving family and friends.  Thank you one and all.  Every year November's family project is to disguise the turkey so the hunter won't make him Thanksgiving dinner.  The creativity of the families is my favorite part.  This year tops last year so sit back and let these fabulous firsties explain how their families disguised the family turkey. Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey Cooking 2012

They did it!  Each child had to write how they would cook a turkey.  We took the steps to the final draft and practiced reading them out loud.  We talked about eye contact, prosody, and their TV personality.  These firsties are the BEST!  The class was treated to a behind the scenes tour of the kitchen and even filmed their stories with cooking tools!  They did a fabulous job in the kitchen thanks to the fabulous lunch ladies.  The kids really enjoyed the freezer the best.  I think Elijah was the bravest one by going in the freezer.  We looked at the mixer, behind the line where they get hot lunch, and the warmers even had 2 doors.  Overall it gave the kids a real sense of cooking a turkey in the kitchen.  It was so much fun.  Enjoy the movie.  Thank you to the fabulous lunch ladies for always taking care of us.  We love you ladies!  Make sure to follow the directions on your turkey and not from these 6 year olds, unless you want to visit the hospital.  Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

Disguise a Turkey 2012

I love those family projects!  I am a parent too and I know it takes time and energy when you have an already busy day.  That is why I try to give my parents 2 weekends to complete the projects.  It is so well worth it-just check out the video to see.  I know when my own children have projects it seems like such a chore but the memories we create are priceless.  I love talking to them and hearing their ideas and creativity.  After all I helped make these little people and it makes me smile to hear them growing, learning, and laughing while we do it.  Before you know it your baby will be off to middle school...  The Firsties and families did not disappoint this year.  These disguised turkeys are fabulous.  Enjoy them.

I know you have anxiously been waiting...

Here it is! Each child write directions for preparing Thanksgiving turkey for their family. It was an interesting writing assignment. We practiced reading our directions and then I filmed them in the classroom and in the cafeteria. Mark my words...these kids are stars! I put it all together and it is about 9 minutes long. Enjoy every minute of it. Happy Thanksgiving and spend some quality family time together. See you on Monday.

Opps...Turkey fun

I was working so hard to get the video done I almost forgot about anything else this weekend.  Each year our class takes home turkeys for their family project.  The object is to disguise the turkey so the hunter won't get him for Thanksgiving.  Every year the disguises get better and better!  This year was no exception.  Check out the Smilebox to see the disguised turkeys.

My class loves Angry Birds and Skyler made the cutest red Angry Bird.  I just love them all!  When I asked Sofia about her porcupine she told me, "No one wants to eat a porcupine!"  It had me rolling.  I thought it was great with all the athletic turkeys we have this year.  Let's hope that FSU player helps root on Florida State this weekend for the annual Seminoles vs. Gator game and brings back a victory for the Noles! We wrote stories on how to cook a turkey and I am making a  movie so I thought it would be funny to tease with a movie trailer and get the kids really excited. Check it out.

Happy Thanksgiving

Our class has been so busy there was hardly a moment to catch my breath! Today is Thanksgiving and what a blessing today has been.  I am so thankful for my fabulous 18 students and their families.

We learned about the pilgrims and the tough life they lived.  We thought about things we have today that pilgrim children did not get to enjoy.  How cute is this little girl pilgrim?  Alyssa was so cute when she wrote about having a Papa John's pizza but a pilgrim did not. Most of the kids thought of their Nintendo DS like the pilgrim boy to the right.  We enjoyed Monday with Mrs. Cindi and Mrs. Suzanne.  We made turkey cookies, pilgrim hat cookies, and a Thanksgiving retelling bracelet with me! Tuesday was our field trip to the Pioneer Art Settlement in Barberville.  We had a great time and I promise to make that video soon.  Once again Tom Turkey was in disguise so the hunter would not get him.  Make sure to see our parade of disguises.  I am so impressed with the thoughtful outfits.
