Apple Experiment

I just love connecting with other 1st grade classes through Instagram and Twitter.  So on Apple Day we did a little experiment...Who will save the apple? from turning brown...
We used water, Sprite, lemon juice, and vinegar to see which would be the last to turn the apple brown. We have some pretty observant scientists and we watched carefully over the next couple of days.

As you can see by the photos lemon juice was the best helper.  Funny because most of the kids thought water.

Apple Day & birthday singing

Apple Day is a favorite not just because I am a 1st grade teacher learning about Johnny Appleseed, yes 1st grade teachers love to celebrate everything, but Ms. Clutter and I share that same birthday with Appleseed!  The morning started off with a shower of cards and you know hand made ones and drawings are the best!  We had some Apple Jacks fun because of course math is more fun with something to eat.  This year was even more fun because Jude’s mom made both classes cupcakes.  We had a group singing and it was fabulous!
We just love our classes and truly appreciate all the love. How cute are they with all the apple pots on their heads.

Apple Day

Another Apple Day in the record books.  What a day it was!  Thanks to the families donating apple items we were able to have an apple tasting party.  Yummy!  We had Apple Jacks, applesauce, apple cider, apple juice, apple jelly on crackers, and a homemade apple pie.  We had some special helpers come in for some center activities.  We put together apple puzzles, sorted math pictures, rolled number generators and created math problems.  A highlight was the 5 senses apple table.  Read apples won out for the best taste.  Does an apple sink or float?  At first we thought sink but then we used our inquiry skills and tried it out.  Our apple floated?!? can you believe it?  We then had to set up a container of water to try it out over and over again.  We are the best scientists ever!  Make sure to check out our good times through this slide show.

Open House teaser...

21 days, 17 kids, iPad minis, math, dot cards, science tools, responsibility, rules, Zero the Hero, laws, sense, writing, reading, RAZ Kids, and 1 VERY proud teacher...

Trying to keep up with the blog, Twitter, Instagram, and oh so much more...oh but it is so fun.  Tomorrow night is Open House and I finally got the Open House teaser trailer done.  I sent it out late using the fabulous Remind app but maybe some parents didn't get it.  Won't they be in for a surprise in the morning. :) I can hardly wait for all the parents, the kids, the Book Fair, and oh the smiles.  I will have to take more pictures imagine that?  Watch this trailer and prepare for a classroom like no other...

Apple Day 2013

Johnny Appleseed's birthday is big news in 1st grade.  A day filled with apple stations and apple tasting!!  YIPPEE Anything with food is BIG hit.  We enjoyed parents donating apple goodies and some moms even found time to help us out with apple centers.  I tried to capture the day's events and ended up with 133 pictures.  I know a sickness I have.  The funniest thing was at the 5 senses station, there seemed to be loose teeth after eating some apples.  Well low and behold 2 kids had a tooth come out.  Check out the video and see that Isabella and Logan lose a tooth on Apple Day 2013.  Extra special surprise was the cupcakes, singing-cha, cha, cha, and present from my class.  Soooo sweet and can you believe these 6 year olds kept a secret?  Thank you to all the families because it was a great day!  Check out the video for the pictures.

Happy Mother's Day 2013

Wednesday was our annual Muffins for Mom and it was fabulous!  There were muffins, doughnuts, and cinnamon rolls.  The kids are always so excited to give their Mother's Day presents and show their beautiful paintings they did in art.  It is quite a magical time.  This year a fellow teammate thought it would be great for her class to read Robert Munsch's Love You Forever.  Well after I saw the first line videotaped I knew I had to copy her idea and make it my own.  So I recorded the kids reading it and then found pictures of them and their mom from my thousands of pictures this year-YES I know I have a problem taking pictures but they are the cutest little firsties you ever did see!  I picture in pictured or side by sided the video with the picture and the Oscar goes to...me!:)  Just kidding it was so very cute.  Here is a little slideshow of some of the moms.  Enjoy.

"Techy" Book reviews

One reading group is working on making book reviews which are then linked to a QR code and then that code is put on the book! Fancy firsties right?  You have got to love those kids right?  Julianna used the Sonic Pic app with pictures and her voiceover.  Jack and Demetrios took the pictures with an iTouch and then used the green screen to put them in the book.  We hope you enjoy our creations! Leave them a comment, they would love to hear what you think.

My classroom world has really changed in the last year and a half.  Apple is the BIGGEST change.  We love the iTouches, the iPads, the Apple TV, and the Macbook Pro makes the best videos ever! I applied to be an Apple Distinguished Educator.  Thought I would share the video part of my entry.  Got to love those kids!  BIG thanks to everyone along the journey.

Apple Day 2012

Wednesday was Johnny Appleseed Day in 1st grade. Every year we celebrate this American Icon with fun festivities where the kids forget they are learning. fun, fun, fun We counted, sorted, measured, odd/even, tasted, and then related to it all to our 5 senses. Then we went out and tossed the apple, played tug-o-war and then did an apple relay. It was so much fun. BIG THANKS to the volunteers that helped make the day so successful. Ms. Amanda, Grandma Miller, Ms. Alice, Ms. Danielle, and Ms. C-you girls are the BEST!! Check out the video...

Apples, apples, everywhere

Yummy apples!  We enjoyed our annual apple tasting day with a plate full of apple things.  Surprisingly enough the kids preferred the Apple Jacks over the apple pie!  Not me, I loved the apple pie.  We voted on what color apple was the favorite and red was the winner.  Wonder what the Thanksgiving tasting will bring...
