ThingLink
Today's Twitter Chat on #1to1ipadchat talked about creating ThingLinks. ThingLink is an image with live links and of course you know I am game for anything techy and sparkly right?!? So here is my 1st attempt.

Where is our side of the story?
Summer? WOW I have to catch up on so many events
but that will have to wait. I need to get this story out as soon as
possible so sit tight and read this story. I think you need to know how sad and
disappointed I am…
A few months ago a reporter from the New York Times
interviewed me over the phone to talk about parents, the Common Core, and math.
EXCITED-yes! I was but I kept calm and talked from my heart about what I have
learned over the past three years.
I gave her stories about kids'
misconceptions I would not have found if they merely completed worksheets.
For example, I asked one day “Cameron wants to share his cookie with
Logan. Who gets the bigger piece?” The kid responses: "Cameron does
because it is his cookie." "Logan does because Cameron will
give him the whole cookie. When my mom tells me to share I have to give
it to my brother." and another, "Wait if they are sharing they
have to have the same size piece." This was 2 years ago and I have
taught fractions in some shape or form for 17 years. I had students complete hundreds
of worksheets but had no idea this might be a misconception shared by children.
This is just one of many times I learned from talking to my students to
think about math and become mathematicians and not just calculators.
Being a Mathematician, that means something in my
classroom. It means being a problem solver, discovering a strategy to
make numbers easier to work with, and seeing the relevance of math in our
everyday world. Math time is joyful in our classroom. Yes, we
struggle with why?, word problems/situational stories, and bigger numbers but
we are working on really understanding math concepts and not just procedures for
a better foundation. What about the parents?
My parents have questioned Common Core and how we are implementing it in
the classroom. How could they not when all they read are stories bashing
the Common Core and how parents can't do the kid's homework? My thought-Parents
shouldn't be doing the kid's homework. I conference with parents and show them
samples of their child's thinking. I explain pitfalls and provide
strategies so they see the relevance and most important I ask them to talk
with their child. Talk about
money-earning it, spending it, estimate how large or how long it would take to
do something, about how 10 is such a powerful number and building on that helps
add and subtract double digit numbers in the 1st grade and yes they
regroup with understanding and not borrowing.
Borrowing means you are giving something back and that is not the case
in double digit subtraction. I had
parents upon parents willing to talk to Ms. Rich but they were never
called. Parents have told me:
- Wow finally a way I do math and now my kid can do math a different way than a book.
- I wish my 2 older children would have learned math this way because they have no idea why they do the steps they do and rely on a calculator.
- I am so excited to learn right along with my child because I see math differently.
Not everyone has a Common Core bashing story but you rarely hear about
the success. Common Core is here and we
are learning, teaching, collaborating, and creating as a community. We need to hear success stories so I beg you
read this story:
After, know our story and send this reporter a comment in support of
Common Core. By the way after 30 minutes
of praises and stories I did invite her to visit and she said she would talk to
her editor. We never heard from her
again. Maybe she would rethink that visit to Cypress Creek Elementary in Port
Orange, Florida. Sad…

Mother's Day
My mom is my hero. She is the hardest worker I know. She loves to cook and help people. She makes me laugh and brings joy to everyone around her. She is the best person I know and I am proud of her each and every day. My mother had to quit school in the 2nd grade in Taiwan to help her family. She had a hard time reading and writing while I grew up but always knew the letter grades and I was expected to get As not Cs. She worked 2 or more jobs for as long as I can remember to make sure my brothers and I had the things we needed and most of the things we wanted. She has been to every graduation and was front and center when I won Volusia County Teacher of the Year. She has no idea how much I admire, love, and treasure her but I do try to tell her all the time. She continues to be an amazing mom and Ahma to my children.
Now she is Ahma to my class. She volunteers in my classroom on Wednesday and runs our Reading Counts store-JW Beanies. The kids love her and it warms my heart to have her so close. Thank you mom for everything!
Our Annual Muffins for Mom was Friday and it was well attended. The kids made the cutest frames with pictures letting their mom know why they loved them, got to LOVE Pinterest! We watched a video I made of the kids with their mom sharing a moment sometime this year. It was pretty cool to see how many pictures I have of these moms and their firstie! These moms are so involved and loving! They rock! Thank you for making it to our classroom but most of all thank you for being the best mom ever! Happy Mother's Day.

Easter 2014
Easter is such a special time of year! It is so much fun with the annual 1st grade egg hunt. Each year we watercolor a piece of paper and overnight they are transformed into Easter baskets. I have the BEST parents since they send in filled eggs and even come by to hide them for us. We graphed jelly beans, made a cute bunny craft and even had a visit from the Easter Bunny. I took the kids outside for some bunny, bunny, chick. They were too cute running around after one another. We came back and they thought they were picking up their baskets for the egg hunt. Little did they know Ms. Susan hid them around the room. It was a free for all! So much fun. Check out the video. Happy Easter one and all!

Technopalooza!!
I know crazy title but you should see the CRAZY things these firsties can do! I read on Twitter about back channeling (thanks @kathycassidy) and thought the benefits would be outstanding. I have been in workshops and I want to talk out loud with comments or questions but as an adult I know better. Well what about all those mad blurters in 1st grade? Why not give them an alternative? We were learning about living and nonliving things. We previewed a few youtube songs and another video. We used todays meet to back channel. The kids started by scanning a QR code to get in the meeting. They added their name and comments throughout. They could also ask questions and we could read their thoughts while listening and forming our own comments/questions. You might be thinking too many things to do…well I wanted to see what they could do and they did not disappoint! These kids are amazing! Check out our flipogram.
We read Frog and Toad, The Kite last week as our reading story. I challenged a reading group to create a Keynote with photos and information to share about frogs and toads. Here is Rick sharing his under the document camera. He is still working on editing and adding final touches. They are like sponges I tell you.

Game Show Thursday is a BIG HIT!! We are using jeopardylabs.com and the app Free Game Show Sound Board (thanks Tony Vincent) to create an atmosphere where our learning is rewarded and fun! There is such a wide variety of jeopardy game boards from math concepts, story books we read, science concepts, and oh so much more. The kids are all into helping out their teammates, cheering one another on, and pointing out when I forget a sound. Seriously should I be having this much fun at work?!?
@GoNoodle might be a new favorite! We are working throughout the day and stopping to take brain breaks to recharge and improve our laser-like focus! Here we are singing Let It Go from Frozen. The boys were ready for Happy from Despicable Me 2. They love earning time and watching our class creature grow from exercising. Give GoNoodle a try if you haven't yet.

Jack Hartmann!
Today was THE day! No not April Fool's Day, I mean yes it was that but that wasn't the best part of the day. Jack Hartmann came to CCE today and boy was it FUN! He was too sweet and even posed for a class picture today. Sorry Reese and Christopher were out. Reese had a fever but we know how much you wanted to be there. We sang for you. Check out the class pic.
Yes, you see a gator on my head. You should have seen Jack's face when I mentioned I was a HUGE Seminole fan. Yes I took it in stride and it was Jack Hartmann and we all know how very important and talented he is! The concert ended with Hip Hop Tooty Ta! BEST TIME EVER-love, love, love the ending to that one. Watch this…
So speaking of April Fool's…I gave everyone a red today and there were some surprised faces. They didn't know I used remind101 to tell their parents, "Everyone was on red today! Happy April Fool's Day!" Too funny. I even got texts and phone calls from parents. Sure hope no one got in trouble. Wonder what the next 46 days will bring...

St. Patricks Day 2014
The leprechaun reeked chaos this morning! You should have seen it! The first 30 minutes of the morning were filled with cleaning, moving, and visiting the bathroom. Yes visiting the bathroom. The leprechaun even changed the toilet water color. He is quite mischievous. Let me start back to Friday. The kids shared their rainbows and leprechaun traps and they were too cute. Can I just say sharing family projects might be one of my most favorite things about first grade. Parents you really outdid yourselves this year. Check out the pictures. So we set up the traps and left for the weekend. We walked in and the room was upside down and in a complete mess. Imagine green glitter and oh my the custodian might have a fit seeing it all around the room. Well it took us a awhile to clean it up but I will say it made for interesting journal entries today. Thank you to the families for the awesome green taste test party this afternoon- an annual Wright's Rippers tradition. It was so busy I forgot to take a poll for the favorite. I will have to let you know tomorrow. I bet all my leprechaun catchers are sleepy tonight...
